When a security officer applies for certification, he or she will have 30 days from the time of application to obtain training, pass the course, and get fingerprinted. We recommend that you don’t apply for certification until you know which class you’re taking, since you don’t want your 30 days to expire before you take the class.
Once you get confirmation of your application, you will need to print your temporary certificate and your fingerprint form. You can then go on-line to schedule your fingerprint appointment, which also requires payment on line with a credit card or debit card, and you can also register for class here at AFI. It does not matter whether you get fingerprinted first or take the course first, but you should make your fingerprint appointment as soon as possible, since there may be a 2 to 3 week wait for the appointment.
Once certification has been granted, it is portable- it belongs to the security officer, like a driver's license, and the NJSP will mail the certification card to the address entered on the security officer’s certification application after the fingerprint results and the class results are forwarded to the NJSP.

Although many of us do not carry handcuffs or pepper spray while working, both the Basic Handcuffing (PATH) & Basic Pepperspray (OCAT) Courses are designed to teach more than just handling and application techniques.
